The National Potato Council of Kenya (NPCK) has reported results from Viazi Soko, its digital e-commerce platform for potato farmers. ಇದು ಏಕೆ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿದೆ
According to the poster, about one million smallholder farmers grow potatoes in Kenya, but yields average less than 10 tons per hectare, compared with a potential of 40 tons per hectare under proper agronomic practices. The main constraint is limited access to and use of quality inputs, mainly because of their high cost.
ಏನು ಮಾಡಲಾಯಿತು
- NPCK developed Viazi Soko, a digital e-commerce platform accessible via web and USSD, to disseminate information and strengthen market linkages.
- The platform helps smallholders procure certified seed, fertilisers and agrochemicals, and access services such as soil testing, mechanisation, spraying, market information, extension, pest and disease advisory and weather forecasts. It also connects farmers to market outlets.
- NPCK uses the Village-Based Advisor (VBA) model to mobilise and register farmers, aggregate input demand and organise collective procurement. Negotiated discounts and commissions give farmers access to inputs at competitive prices, while VBAs earn commissions.
ಫಲಿತಾಂಶಗಳು
- 301,699 farmers registered for extension and advisory services since January 2021.
- About 12,000 smallholder farmers actively use the platform to order certified seed and other inputs, contributing to a productivity increase of over 13 t/ha among participating farmers.
- 26 input and service providers are on the platform.
- Farm input transactions have reached KES 192.5 million (USD 1,503,906).
- For the August–October 2026 short rains season, the admin dashboard shown on the poster records KES 10,841,241 (USD 84,700).
